Alcohol Detox Treatment
During inpatient alcohol detox, the client ceases to consume alcohol and has the effects of their withdrawal managed by professionals in a safe, comfortable environment.
Alcohol detoxification is distinct from alcohol addiction treatment, and is often a necessary precursor.
Following detox, alcohol addiction treatment is the process of addressing the causes of the addiction and implementing ways to support the individual in their life without alcohol use.
Alcohol detox generally lasts approximately three to five days but may last longer under certain circumstances.
During this time, the client’s body works to re-regulate, and begins to function without the chemical influence of alcohol. Given that the body has come to rely on and expect the presence of alcohol in its system, this can be an uncomfortable adjustment.
For example, one of these changes is that the brain’s neurotransmitters are no longer suppressed by the effects of the alcohol in the body. This shift can lead to hyperexcitability, anxiety, and disorientation.
Other alcohol withdrawal symptoms that may be felt during this adjustment, include:
- Excessive sweating
- High fever
- High blood pressure
- Hallucinations (tactile, visual, and auditory)
Another possible withdrawal symptom is called delirium tremens (DTs); an intense state of confusion, often accompanied by sweating, shaking, irregular heart rate, and hallucinations.
Generally, delirium tremens seem to occur about three days into the alcohol detoxification process and in some cases is potentially fatal.
While the severity of withdrawal symptoms will vary dependent on the patient, it is recommended that anyone undergoing alcohol detox do so while supervised by a medical professional, or through a dedicated inpatient detoxification program.
Undergoing alcohol detoxification in a recovery or treatment center ensures that support will be available in the case of dangerous withdrawal symptoms, but also offers treatment for symptoms that, while not injury or life-threatening, can be highly uncomfortable.
Alcohol Detox Treatment at Alo House
If you’re thinking about alcohol detox for yourself or a loved one, know that support is available and that it is possible to undergo detoxification relatively comfortably.
At Alo House, we understand how difficult recovery from alcohol dependence can be, which is why we offer a comprehensive program that includes a safe and comfortable detox followed by our non 12 step alcohol addiction treatment program.
While the symptoms of withdrawal may sound scary, it is possible to undergo detox relatively comfortably.
Getting to the other side of withdrawal is an important step leading up to the treatment process, and a huge step toward completing treatment. It need not be undertaken alone.
Often times, people will fall short of completing detox because withdrawal becomes too difficult. Or if they do complete the process, they relapse as a result of not beginning a proper treatment program immediately following the detoxification process.
Alo House is the leader of the Compassionate Care Model of Treatment. Our caring and professional therapists will safely and comfortably support you through the detox process and remain by your side as you transition through alcohol recovery treatment.
