Incidental Medical Services (IMS)
Alo House Recovery Centers in Mar Vista, CA provides Incidental Medical Services (IMS) that address medical issues associated with detoxification and/or of treatment from substance use disorders.
The goal of IMS is to amplify the safety of treatment services and provide medical care related to the client’s long-term recovery.

IMS does not provide general primary medical care but is a new supplemental service under our current Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) license.
Incidental Medical Services Allows us to…
Monitor Health Status to Determine Whether Transfer of the Client is Warranted to Receive Urgent Care
Prior to admission, a pre-assessment will be completed by a staff member to determine if the client is appropriate for care. Each individual will be closely observed and have their vitals checked at least every 30 minutes for the first 36 hours, and three times daily for the duration of their treatment stay.
While on detox protocol, clients will be assessed daily by following COWS or CIWA protocol as needed. If a client shows signs of detoxification withdrawal beyond our scope, we will arrange for the individual to receive appropriate medical care.
Treat Substance Use Disorders, Including Detoxification
Treating substance use disorders, including detoxification, is a multidimensional process requiring precise care coordination. Alo House Recovery Centers health care practitioners work with the clients’ primary care physicians or any outside providers to coordinate care relevant to any conditions that may impact a successful treatment episode.
Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) is in the residential level of care, although Alo House is not a maintenance program. IMS will be provided by one or more physicians licensed by the Medical Board of California or the Osteopathic Medical Board who are knowledgeable and experienced in addiction medicine.
Other services can be provided by additional health care providers acting within the scope of practice of their license and under the direction of a physician. Clients are offered pharmaceutical interventions for substance use and mental health issues based on addiction medicine, psychiatric medicine, and internal medicine’s best practices.
Administer Tests Associated With Detoxification From Alcohol or Drugs
A variety of testing services are used under the direction of the care team, physician and/or health care practitioner and are used to effectively treat and monitor detoxification services.
Testing includes toxicology via urine drug screens, blood alcohol content via breathalyzer and laboratory analysis as determined to be necessary and appropriate.
Obtain Medical Histories
Comprehensive assessment of each individual client is necessary to offer excellence in care and to maintain a safe environment.
During the intake process we will be obtaining our clients Health Care Questionnaire face-to-face which will be reviewed and signed off on by a health care provider within 24-hours of admission.
A physician will also be completing the IMS Certification Form face-to-face. This process is to provide the highest level of clinical care in the detox and residential levels.
Oversee Clients Self-Administering Medications
All clients who are prescribed medication from a physician have the right to take such prescriptions as long as it does not conflict with our abstinence policy or impair their ability to function in the milieu.
All clients who are in need of prescription or over the counter medication have the right to self-administer such medications to the point that it is not considered adverse.
It is Alo House Recovery Center’s philosophy that medications with a potential for abuse are contraindicated for individuals with substance use disorders.
Our constant monitoring of nurses satisfies many insurance companies requirements.
