Maria Almada was raised in an environment where drug use was all around her. Once she started using herself, substance use controlled her life for 17 years. Maria became very comfortable with going in and out of a jail cell. As a result of her addiction, she lost her children to child protective services. Finally, a moment of clarity came over her and she realized that she needed to do something different.
Maria entered a drug treatment facility for women trying to regain custody of their children and there she was introduced to a 12 step program. Since that time, she has regained custody of her children, has gone back to school and begun the process of becoming a certified counselor at Oxnard College and has been clean since 2014!
Working in the field of substance use treatment has given her a true passion for watching others’ lives change as a result of becoming free of alcohol and drugs. Maria says, “the most beautiful thing to see is an addict who comes in broken and leaves with a genuine smile on their face because of the connection we make here at Alo House Recovery Centers.”
