Missy Parent, 2015
On January 1, 2015 my 25 year old daughter was struggling once again with a drug addiction and only wanted to go to a recovery center in California that was dog friendly. She packed up her things in Florida, I purchased her a one way plane ticket and she arrived in the middle of the night to a detox center in Southern CA. The next day after a bit of a crazy start, decided to move to a second center. While they were nice, it was clear that that place wasn’t for her either. She wanted and needed more than just group counselors and AA/NA.
After 5 failed attempts, she wanted to truly learn about herself, and needed personal as well as group guidance. On day 8; she made more phone calls; and Alo House came and picked her up. Of course, I did my YELP search and there were only a few reviews and they were all great, but of course I was skeptical. But I couldn’t and didn’t make the calls or the final decision. I just prayed that the reviews were real and that Alo House could help.
I can’t begin to tell you how phenomenal they have been to her. In the 75 days she has been with them, they’ve worked with her on all her personal issues-not just the addiction. While many centers claim to have physicians and therapists on staff, Alo House actual does. Jodi Wagner; Jil’s guardian angel and case manager is just that! She’s been there every step of the way. She’s given Jil the ability to make her own decisions, but held her accountable, something parents don’t always do. Suzi, the clinical director is just awesome; and we’ve done several one/one sessions with and without my daughter.
Learning to understand Jil; and also to understand myself has been an enlightening experience. During her 5 week detox and residential time, Alo House supported Jil and helped her make doctor and dentist appointments for her (and took her); and made sure everything about her was feeling good and healthy before moving into a sober living house.
Jil wasn’t happy with her original therapist; but she hung in there for nearly a month, and then a transition was made! It was made based upon fact, and not my daughter just wanting to run from what she was hearing (which we know often occurs). Scott, her new therapist has been doing a great job with her and she loves seeing him.
After 5 weeks she moved from the residential facility into the sober living house with daily IOP. Not once since she moved; has she blown up at me or exhibited any of the angry signs from the past. While we are both learning about each other, she’s growing into a beautiful strong woman . She loves the house staff; and everyone living in the house.
All recovery centers answer the phones and tell you how much they are going to do for your loved ones. It’s their job to do that. While other recovery centers have success, Alo House is the only one I know of that has one/one therapists and psychiatrists all while working with your insurance company to get payment. To me, it’s what was missing in her last stays.
I pray every day that she will stay clean and successful and know the longer she stays in treatment with Alo House, the better the chance for success. While we’ve used a combination of very slow paying insurance and a some out of pocket affordable payments, it has NEVER ever been about money with Alo House. Evan, Jared and Thomas have never threatened to move her or change her course of medical care.
Recently Jil has signed up for a real estate course as well as gotten a job. She’s definitely on the road to success and I hope to come back at our one year anniversary and tell you how fabulous she’s doing. I know Jil will always be in touch with her support group from Alo House and for that I will forever be grateful! Believe what you see and hear…..Alo House is the real deal when it comes to support and love.
