A NEW MODEL OF ADDICTION TREATMENT
Alo House has created a community-based, luxury, long-term holistic drug & alcohol rehab by running inpatient, outpatient, and transitional living facilities under one umbrella.
These multiple levels of care give us flexibility, and allows us to create ways of making substance abuse treatment affordable to most families. We shepherd clients through the treatment process by helping them to integrate themselves into the fabric of our community, and even more importantly, by focusing on what their lives are going to look like post-treatment.
Most treatment professionals have admitted that the old 30-day model is not working. The National Institute on Drug Abuse characterizes programs shorter than 90 days “of limited effectiveness.” Affordable, long-term, community-based care that really works is the future of drug and alcohol treatment … And this is what we are committed to providing each of our clients and their families with. The long term treatment model is at the core of our program, but we offer multiple treatment options based on our individualized care model. These include non-12 step rehab & our holistic addiction treatment tracks.
People suffering from alcohol and drug addiction are often in denial of the severity of their illness, and the tremendous impact that it is has on their lives and the lives of the people around them. A professional intervention, a guided process by which family, friends and a trained professional lovingly confront the addict and their disease, can be highly effective in engaging the person into treatment.
The trained and knowledgeable staff at Alo House can provide intervention services. We can help the individual understand the severity of their addiction, and provide them with the support, motivation and guidance necessary to receive the treatment that they desperately need.
Drug and Alcohol Detoxification, or ‘Detox’ for short, is the process of allowing the body to rid itself of a drug while managing the symptoms of withdrawal. It is the first step in a drug treatment program, and should be followed by treatment at a certified and licensed inpatient facility like Alo House. Detox alone with no follow-up is not treatment, and usually unsuccessful.
Alo House provides full detoxification services on site. Our facility is housed in a peaceful and very comfortable six-bed home, conducive to beginning recovery. Alo House is licensed by the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) as a residential detox facility. Once the detox process is complete, our clients may begin regular programing.
Assessment and Referral
One of the most important aspects of truly effective addiction treatment is a proper assessment by a qualified professional. Alo House understands that every person is unique in their symptoms and circumstances, and requires specialized planning in their addiction treatment and recovery process. We provide full and comprehensive assessments for each of our prospective clients, so that they receive treatment specifically tailored to meet their individualized needs.
Our program is not meant for everyone. At Alo House, we only accept highly motivated people who are willing to fully participate in their recovery, and who are voluntarily seeking treatment. With our extensive network of resources, built upon years of activity out in the field and in the addiction community, we provide clients who do not end up with us with quality referrals to settings appropriate for their successful recovery.
It is our strong belief that addicts and their families need an advocate through the difficult process of early recovery. These early days can be consuming and overwhelming. They need someone who is knowledgeable; who can provide help, guidance, knowledge and support through this difficult time; who can provide comfort and support while the addict focuses on what is most important – their recovery. We provide each client with full and comprehensive case management throughout the entire treatment process: from the first phone call and consultation, to aftercare. We are there every step of the way.
During the outpatient phase of their treatment, our case management efforts focus on the real-world and practical matters of building a life outside of treatment.
While clients are in Sober Living, they are able to continue with the Alo House Outpatient Program. The length of time will vary, depending on individual needs. The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is an evening outpatient program, which is designed to give clients the opportunity to work during the day, and continue their important therapeutic work in the evenings and weekends. Some of the more intensive therapeutic work occurs in the outpatient program, since the client is ready to go deeper into the roots of their emotional disturbances only after the fog of the first couple of months of being clean and sober has been lifted.
This is the continuation of the work they began with their therapists in the inpatient setting. During the IOP program, clients will be challenged with more advanced concepts, and given more of the important tools they’ll need to flourish and thrive in their lives. Individualized Care Models
Alo House offers non 12 step & holistic individualized care for different types of people: a youth track, a professionals track, and custom treatment or non-12 step plans for people who don’t easily fall into one category or another. Detailed assessments and evaluations are undertaken upon admission into the program. The clinical team produces treatment plans for each client, in response to the unique set of needs and circumstances of that particular client.
Goal Oriented Recovery
Alo House provides a ‘bridge back to reality.’ For each client in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction, the question is always, ‘When does reality begin?’ The answers will vary from client to client, but will usually take the form of work, school, and long-term plans for the future. In collaboration with the clients themselves, the clinical team, and other family members, benchmarks of success are established along the path of recovery. A long-term treatment plan emerges from this work. And with a transparent process, everyone can be clear about the goals of the recovery process up front. The end goal of the individualized treatment model is to provide long-term accountability to our clients.
Young Adult Drug Rehab
At Alo House, it is our job to help get our younger clients up and running and functioning in the adult world. This is done by teaching them practical life-skills, and accelerating their transformation into adulthood. We believe that we are either reinforcing the problem of ‘learned helplessness’ that so many young people today suffer from, or we are helping achieve a state of autonomy. The heart of our work is geared toward helping our young clients achieve the freedom to live their own lives. And we make sure to have some fun in the process — without joy, a sober life is next to impossible.
Professionals Addiction Treatment
Alo House offers a ‘Professionals Program,’ geared toward those who have either not lost their jobs, who are wanting to re-enter their profession, or who are otherwise considered ‘high functioning.’ The facility that houses those in the professional program is designed to suit an adult, executive clientele, and the milieu reflects this specific group. The recovery program takes place during three nights in the evening, from 6pm until 9pm, recognizing that people are busy putting their professional houses back in order during daytime hours.
Comprehensive Drug Testing Program
Frequent and comprehensive drug monitoring is an integral component to our clients’ care. The level of accountability that is provided by frequent and highly accurate drug testing virtually guarantees that our clients stay sober as long as they belong to our monitoring program. This drug testing program is monitored by Dr. Lisa Benya, DO, a renowned addictions specialist.
Best Practices In The IndustryAlo House Malibu has incorporated the industry’s best practices into our drug and alcohol testing program, including laboratory services at three SAMHSA Certified facilities, and two that are dedicated to medication monitoring. SAMHSA, which stands for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, is the agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that leads public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation. SAMHSA’s mission is to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on America’s communities. At Alo House, we want to provide the best in all areas, to ensure the highest level of safety and care.
Alo House Recovery Centers offers our clients Holistic Psychiatry through our consulting psychiatrist, Dr. Meredith Sagan. Holistic Psychiatry can be beneficial to those who have not seen results from multiple treatment episodes that employed more conventional approaches to treating mental health, and for individuals who are searching for more natural and integrative ways to balance the mind, body, and spirit.
Our goal in using Holistic Psychiatry to treat our clients is to reduce their suffering and to assist them in restoring their full physical and emotional health, as well as their balance with the environment. Holistic Psychiatry targets the source of emotional disturbances and the underlying causes of one’s pain, and the self-medication that so often follows this pain.
Dr. Sagan offers a unique combination of treatments to help you or your loved one find stability, peace, and balance, safely and effectively. She does this with extensive expertise in psychiatric medication management, homeopathy, and mind-body medicine psychotherapies. Dr. Sagan will review and adjust any medication you may be taking to the safest and most effective regimen possible, or start new medications, psychiatric, homeopathic, or herbal, if indicated. In our dynamic and highly intuitive environment, you will develop a deep understanding of yourself through mind-body techniques that are also designed to eventually replace your medication if practiced regularly.
The Alo House Holistic Psychiatry program is designed to give you tools that will last a lifetime in treating the trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and psycho-spiritual crises which so often co-occur with addiction.
Group counseling sessions serve as a core aspect of successful alcohol and drug addiction treatment. Group sessions cover a variety of topics such as addiction education, relapse prevention, and relationships. Groups take place daily, Monday to Friday, and provide safe, structured environments where people can learn about their addiction and receive support and encouragement from others who are also in treatment.
Individual counseling sessions provide clients with the opportunity to educate themselves about their addiction and work on ways to sustain successful recovery in a one-on-one setting with a licensed therapist and/or certified chemical dependency counselor. Therapists, counselors and clients collaborate and work together to develop ways to maintain sobriety and prevent relapse. Each client receives at least one one-on-one session per week.
Family and Couple Counseling
The disease of addiction does not only affect the individual abusing the substances, but the entire family as well. Family group and private counseling sessions can provide the addict and his or her loved ones with an opportunity to work on the process of recovery together. What often gets lost in the fights, disagreements and conflict that often accompany the disease of addiction is the underlying love that family members have for one another. Family counseling sessions provide opportunities for loved ones to connect and fight the illness together, increasing the chances for sustained recovery. Family groups and private sessions take place every Saturday, along with a fun family meal, which gives everyone a chance to get to know other people who’ve been through what they are going through, and receive support.

Addiction recovery is a lifelong process that requires ongoing, continual care. And Alo House wants to be there with you through it all. Alumni meetings take place every Friday evening at Alo House, and are available to all clients following discharge. Alumni groups provide former clients with a system where they can continue to receive lasting help and support to continue their successful recovery from addiction. It is so great to get to watch our alumni coming back to welcome and lend a comforting ear to the new people.
